Nestled on a scenic hilltop in Vermont, the Putney School Summer Arts offers students aged 14 to 17 an immersive experience where they can dive deep into their creative passions, build a vibrant community, and grow personally. Each summer, this unique program brings together around 200 students and 40 faculty members from across the United States and around the world, all united by a love of the arts. Together, these aspiring artists, musicians, writers, dancers, actors, and filmmakers create a supportive environment where they can learn, take risks, and thrive.

As I enter my third summer as the Director of Putney School Summer Arts, and my tenth summer with the program, I remain in awe of the curiosity and dedication students bring with them year after year. They arrive with a clear purpose—to learn and grow as artists, whether by exploring something completely new or by pushing the boundaries of an art form they know well.

This dedication shines brightest in our studios. There is a quiet intensity as students immerse themselves in their craft, and an infectious joy when they share their work with one another. Their openness to experimenting with new techniques and approaches is inspiring, as they dive wholeheartedly into each project, no matter how unfamiliar it may be. Here, they have the freedom and encouragement to explore their potential.

One of the things that makes Putney so special is the sense of magic that emerges as students come together each summer. Our decision to limit technology during the program plays a key role in this. With face-to-face interaction as our primary means of communication, students experience a profound sense of presence and connection. Assemblies help us stay informed, while community traditions like Contra Dances, Student Events, and the spirited Dorm Olympics create joyful memories and deepen bonds.

Our daily programming is designed to stretch students beyond their comfort zones. From morning Sing sessions to our weekend camping trip, every experience is intended to encourage students to take risks in the studio and explore new avenues in their creative work. These activities foster resilience and confidence, giving students a foundation they can draw upon as they take artistic leaps.

As I look to the upcoming summer, I am eager to see the unique perspectives and ideas this new group of students will bring to the program. Each summer, students challenge themselves to try new things, to be bold, and to create with passion. I look forward to witnessing the incredible ways they will learn, grow, and express themselves at Putney—a place where they can be seen for who they are, and where creativity and community flourish side by side.
