National Service-Learning Conference
Our Foundation supports Shinnyo-en youth and selects grantees to participate in the National Service-Learning Conference for an exchange of best practices, leadership development, professional networking, and learning opportunities.
The National Service-Learning Conference highlights and promotes service-learning as a way of teaching and learning that builds academic and citizenship skills while renewing communities. It is the largest of its kind in the U.S. that provides professional development to a diverse audience of kindergarten to higher education students and educators, administrators, pre-service teacher education staff and faculty, researchers, youth leaders, community-based organization staff, policy-makers, and corporate and foundation officers. Shinnyo-en Foundation has been a long-term sponsor of this conference which the National Youth Leadership Council has been organizing for over three decades. The Foundation’s involvement has also included addressing keynote speeches, presenting workshops, and sponsoring participation of our grantees, Shinnyo-en Youth Association (YA) members, and Shinnyo-en temple staff.
Furthermore, Shinnyo-en Foundation has sponsored the Day of Service, which is an off-site service day in the communities of the conference host city. The Day of Service consists of group reflections before and after the service, learning about the needs of the communities, and meeting their needs by engaging in direct and hands-on service projects at local organizations. It is a day for the conference participants to give back to the conference host city through service.
