Joy, Bonding, and Sharing in the Redwoods: My Shinnyo-en Foundation Retreat Experience

Surrounded by the peaceful beauty of the redwoods, I joined a small, diverse group for the Shinnyo-en Foundation retreat—a weekend designed for connection, reflection, and growth. The gathering brought together around 31 people, from Shinnyo-en youth practitioners to inspiring leaders and changemakers representing organizations that support youth empowerment and interfaith understanding.

Although Shinnyo-en values were woven into the spirit of the weekend, the retreat itself was inclusive to all backgrounds. It offered a rare pause from daily responsibilities—a chance to breathe deeply, step away from screens, and focus on the roots of meaningful leadership and service. The schedule encouraged us to be fully present from Friday evening to Sunday afternoon, making each moment feel purposeful and connected to the whole experience.

Two moments stand out vividly. First, walking the labyrinth and wandering the nature trail behind the casitas—steps that seemed to lead both inward and outward, fostering quiet reflection and authentic conversation. Second, the “inside-outside box” activity in our small groups. By the time we reached this exercise, bonds were so strong that emotions flowed freely—real tears, heartfelt empathy, and genuine connection.

My biggest takeaway was the reminder that leadership is not only about strategy or skill, but about emotional intelligence—the ability to understand and connect with others on a human level. As I left, I carried with me the same grounded strength and quiet inspiration I felt standing among the redwoods—rooted in purpose, branching toward new possibilities, and deeply grateful for the growth that blooms when we come together.
